Old TypewriterThere are plenty of people you can write to in order to voice your objections to the proposed Academy.

To save you some time I've put together a list.

I recently wrote to Michael Gove and if you like you can use my letter as a template.  You can download it HERE.

So, get writing and let the powers that be know that there is strong parental opposition to closing St Bernard's. Here's the list:

1. Your local MP

  • Local MPs will only respond to their constituents so if your local MP is Conservative then it's really worthwhile writing to them.
  • Michael Gove, for example, is MP for Surrey Heath so please write to him if you are one of his constituents. Email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
  • Adam Afriyie, the Windsor MP was educated at the Addey and Stanhope School, a VA school. Email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
  • John Randall, the Uxbridge MP was educated at Rutland House School, an independent school in Hillingdon.  Email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
  • I found a very useful web site the other day that you can use to contact your MP or a  member of the House of Lords.  Go to http://www.writetothem.com, type in your postcode and away you go! It's the sister site of http://www.theyworkforyou.com that you can use to keep track of what your MP says in parliament and search parliamentary debates.

2. Northampton Diocese

  • Northampton Diocese is the co-sponsor, along with Slough Council, of the proposed Academy.
  • The list of people in NORES, the Northampton Diocesan Office for RE, Evangelisation, Catechesis and Schools, is here.
  • I suggest Monsignor Kevin McGinnell, Episcopal Vicar for Education, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and Mrs Frances Image, Schools Commissioner, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

3. Your local Diocese

  • Northampton Diocese funds St Bernard's even though only a minority of children at the school live in the Diocese.
  • Please write to your local Diocese asking why they don't contributeto St Bernard's, which is the only Catholic Grammar school for miles around.

4. Slough Council

  • Slough Council are the co-sponsors of the proposed Academy.
  • Clair Pyper, Strategic Director of Education and Children's Services, is the person to write to.  Her email address is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

5. St Bernard's Chair of Governors

  • The chair of governors at St Bernard's is Howard McBrien.  His email address is This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

 6. Michael Gove

  • No, he won't answer personally but if his civil servants keep seeing letters about St Bernard's the message may get through that there is strong parental opposition.

7. Schools Minister - Nick Gibb (Conservative)

  • See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8675705.stm#gove for further details.
  • According to Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Gibb - Nick Gibb was born in Amersham, Buckinghamshire and was educated at Bedford Modern School, Bedford, Maidstone Grammar School, Kent,
  • Roundhay School, Leeds, and Thornes House School, Wakefield.
  • So, he went to a grammar school himself and was born in a county that still has grammar schools.  Must be worth a try!

8. Minister of State - Sarah Teather (Liberal Democrat)

  • See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8675705.stm#gove for further details.
  • - As a Lib Dem I didn't think it worth mentioning her but according to Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Teather - she was educated at the independent Leicester Grammar School.

9. Junior minister - Tim Loughton (Conservative)

  • See http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8675705.stm#gove for further details.
  • According to Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Loughton - he went to the comprehensive Priory School in Lewes so probably not very sympathetic to our cause.
