At the recent elections at St Bernard's for three parent governors, three members of the FaCT Executive Committee put themselves forward and were elected. They are: 1. Chris Beer 2. Pat McGill 3. Tony O’Shea Congratulations to all of them. While none of the six candidates who stood for the parent governor positions expressed support for the merger, it's still great to know that now all the parent governors at St Bernard's are definitely opposed to it. On the downside, the three parent governors represent very much a minority of the governing body, comprising as it does: a) Eleven Foundation Governors appointed by the Diocese of Northampton, of whom at least four will be parents of children attending the school; b) Two representative Governors appointed by Slough Borough Council; c) Two elected Teacher Governors; d) Three elected Parent Governors; e) One elected non-teaching member of staff; f) The Headteacher To discuss this article, join our mailing list. |

On Tuesday 22 September 2009, FaCT (Faith and Choice Together) was formally created. It now has a Constitution which you can download HERE and a membership form which you can download HERE. We felt it was important to formally constitute FaCT for a number of reasons, not least so that when FaCT members contact other organisations or the media we can do so on behalf of FaCT, rather than as individuals opposed to the merger. Therefore, the meeting on 22 September was FaCT's Annual General Meeting. Once constituted, the members of FaCT agreed that three official candidates would contest the forthcoming parent governor elections at St Bernard's on behalf of FaCT: - Pat McGill - member of FaCT's Executive Committee and current parent governor
- Tony O’Shea - Chairman of FaCT
- Chris Beer - member of FaCT's Executive Committee
Below is a very full extract from the Minutes of the meeting:

There will be a public meeting for anyone opposed to the merger at 7.15pm on Tuesday 22 September 2009 at St Andrew's Methodist Church in Slough (just a few minutes drive from St Bernard's). We have booked Bourne Hall which will seat about 30 but this can be changed to Wesley Hall which can seat 178 at short notice. There is plenty of car parking nearby.
Please note that if we require the bigger hall then the meeting will start at 8pm in Wesley Hall. Please watch this space or join the mailing list for updates!

Margaret Lenton, Head of Slough Grammar, resigned last week according to the 23 September 2009 print edition of the Slough Midweek Observer. No details are given as to the reasons for the resignation. The newspaper states that Mrs Lenton announced her decision last week. In its print edition of Friday 26 September 2009, the newspaper stated that Mrs Lenton intended studying for a PhD and would stay in post for as long as it took the governors to find a replacement. Once a new Head is appointed, it will be interesting to see whether Slough Grammar rejoins the Slough Consortium of grammar schools - St Bernard's, Langley and Herschel - which it left a few years ago. Langley Grammar has a new Headteacher starting in January 2010. Herschel Grammar's Headteacher is new to the job. Of the grammar schools in the Slough area, Mr John McAteer is the longest serving Headteacher by a considerable margin. To discuss this article, join our mailing list. |

Back in July, St Bernard's published the Statement of Intent letter on their web site. We'd already published it here. Of more interest, they also published a letter from Frances Image to the DCSF dated 18 June 2009. Click here to view it. The letter explains why the sponsors (Slough Borough Council) and the co-sponsors (the Diocese) would prefer an opening date of 2013 for the new Academy, rather than, as proposed by the DCSF, 2011. Frances Image gives a few reasons for the request, the first of which is that if the numbers of pupils increased, St Joseph's would struggle to cope. The other reasons stated are that the Higher Education co-sponsor has only recently been appointed and that a delay would allow the governors to be consulted. It's interesting to speculate as to what this is all about. Unfortunately, it offers little hope to those of us opposed to the Academy. |
