It's old news now but just for the record here's the Expression of Interest letter from Slough Borough Council to Lord Adonis at the DCSF dated 3 October 2008. Click HERE to view it. Everyone's in favour, apparently - both governing bodies, the headteachers, the Diocese and the local authority. It'll offer world class education, so they say. Today St Bernard's Monday Letter contained official confirmation that the Expression of Interest phase has begun. Another nail is driven home. St Joseph's letter is due on Friday 22nd. So, wake up everyone who's against this idea! The Expression of Interest phase could be over by the end of this term, then comes the Feasibility phase and the funding agreement could be signed by this time next year. In other words, it's all going to plan. The letter from the school was interesting reading in terms of both content and tone. There's a definite implication that the governors didn't exactly feel fully informed: "Following a letter from the DCSF to Slough Local Authority, the Governors requested a meeting with the Diocese to seek clarification on plans and procedure." "The letter from the DCSF stated that the next stage is for a consultant to work with Slough Borough Council and the Diocese of Northampton, as the lead sponsor, to draw up an Expression of Interest. This would involve consultation with parents and all interested parties." Not a mention of either school's governing bodies here; just the Diocese and Slough Borough Council. |

Above is a process map (click on it to enlarge it) showing the stages and timescales involved in relation to the Diocese of Northampton's proposal, with the support of Slough LA, the School and Governors, to close St. Bernard's as a Catholic Grammar School and open a new and larger Academy. We do hope that this provides you with a clearer picture of what is being proposed and when it may happen. You are urged to continue gaining your pesonal petition support and a copy of the petition form can be found here. These will be used during the EoI (Expression of Interest) or feasibility stages to demonstrate opposition to this proposal. Please note the following facts: |

No official news but we understand that the DCSF (Department for Children, Schools & Families) replied to the governors before Easter. Apparently, their letter stated as fact that the Academy would go ahead within the next few years and spelt out a clear timeline. The letter was so matter of fact about the timeline for the Academy that the governors felt obliged to write back to seek clarification; they clearly believed that the road to Academy status could not be as straightforward as the DCSF was suggesting. Please, anyone who knows anything more, please get in touch. To comment on this article, go to our dedicated message board. |
