It appears that time is of the essence!

Darren Francis at the DCSF (Department for Children, Schools & Families) wrote to one of the FaCT Committee members on Tuesday 20 January 2009 about the Academy process.  The reply was very similar to the one in this article in which he spells out the process.

Essentially, Jim Knight MP, the Minister for Schools and Learners and Ed Balls MP, the Secretary of State for Children Schools & Families have to decide whether to issue a Statement of Intent (SoI) letter to the Council and the Diocese to allow the next phase of the process to begin.  Nothing new there.  This decision has been ongoing for some months.

However, this time Mr Francis says: we estimate that this will be completed during the first week in February.

Don't bother us now, your time will come.  This was the essence of the reply I received from Darren Francis from the Office of the Schools Commissioner after I wrote to the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families, Ed Balls, about the merger.

The League Tables for the 2007/8 academic year were published last week and St Bernard's was the best Slough school for A-level results by some margin.

Indeed, St Bernard's was the 89th best selective school in England for A-levels.  See the full list in this Independent article.  The only other selective school with "Catholic" in its title was St Michael's Catholic Grammar School in North Finchley, a girls' school.

How did the Academies do?  Well, according to this article in the Times, only around a third of Academy pupils gained 5 GCSEs including English and Maths - about the same as St Joseph's at 36%.
