Here are the articles in the media we have managed to find concerning the St Bernard's merger. Please add any others you find to the forum on the message board and we will update this article:
- Article in the Slough & South Bucks Express on 26 June 2009 - Concerns grow over school's future. Mentions this web site and quotes Frances Image from Northampton Diocese saying that nobody has committed to anything but that the Expresson of Interest will be ready by the beginning of September.
- Article in the Sunday Express, 28 June 2009 - 'Dirty Tricks' to kill grammars. The article quotes Nick Seaton, one of our supporters.Article in the Slough Observer on 3 October 2008 - Plans for Slough's first Catholic college. This was written very shortly after the feasibility study was announced.
- Article in the Sunday Telegraph on 21 June 2009 - Families fight to save Slough grammar school. The article is an excellent summary of where we are and gives a human angle by mentioning my daughters and me!
- Article in the Slough Observer on 4 December 2008 - A thousand people upset over Catholic schools merger. This article mentions the 10 Downing Street Petition and has an interview with Tony O'Shea from Faith And Choice Together (FACT).
- Article in the Slough Observer on 17 October 2008 - Merger plans come to a head. This article contains an interview with John McAteer, Headteacher of St Bernard's. At the parent - governor meeting on 19 November, Mr McAteer denied ever having given the interview.
- Article in the Sunday Telegraph on 12 October 2008 - Merger may close grammar school. A much more in depth article that points out that this would be the first academy in the country to involve a grammar school and St Bernard's would have the dubious honour of being the first grammar school to effectively close in more than two decades. Bob McCartney, the chairman of the National Grammar Schools Association, makes some points that are well worth reading. Essentially, he feels that the government is using the funding provided by the Academies programme to abolish Grammar schools by the back door.
